Five things to have ready for your effort before requesting Lean Agile Work Type

Lean Agile is a change in culture in which we pivot away from the Project mindset. Projects focus on set scope, set budget and set release(s). Lean agile creates a flow with consistency that the business brings their features to the program.

· Capacity Funding: Lean Agile efforts are capacity funded and aligned to a Program with Multiple Program Increments (PI)

A solution should be created with overall funding. Don't mistake projects being funded to the capacity of a team to be Capacity Funding.

· Business Involvement: Business manages the Feature Backlog Business will manage the features and set their priority in the backlog. They will determine which Features to target for a Program Increment. Business should provide Product Owners for teams as possible. Don't have delivery teams managing Features for the business.

· Program Increments: A consistent set of iterations in which Features will be delivered First two Program Increments schedule should be set up in an agile tool (i.e.: Jira Align, Agile Craft) - Program Increment and iteration sizes should be consistent throughout the year. Don't expect back-to-back short projects to be considered aligned as Program Increments.

· Consistent Teams: The teams that will consistently support the effort make up the Program and should not change Consistent, stable teams (5-11 people including Scrum Master and Product Owner on each team) will create a stable velocity for the Program Increment. This allows the business to be able to start planning effectively for each Program Increment and create a Roadmap for the effort. Do not plan on doing an impact assessment before each PI to determine which teams will be involved that PI. Inconsistent supporting teams can be set up as Suppliers (with a Supplier PID) if necessary but have to account for 20% or less of the work.

· Joint Planning: The Planning Ceremony for the upcoming PI where business shares the Features they want targeted for delivery, and delivery teams plan out their user stories into the iterations First two Joint Planning ceremonies should be scheduled. Do not mistake iteration planning as a replacement for Joint Planning.

So, you're Agile (or waterfall), how do you start moving toward Lean Agile?
